Listen to Anders Helstrup
Anders Helstrup, born in 1982 in Norway, is a passionate skydiver, adventurer, and filmmaker. His love for extreme sports and exploration has taken him to great heights—literally. However, nothing could have prepared him for what happened during a routine skydive that turned into a once-in-a-lifetime cosmic encounter.
In 2012, while skydiving near Hedmark, Norway, Anders unknowingly became part of an extraordinary event. Equipped with two helmet-mounted GoPro cameras, he later reviewed the footage and made a shocking discovery—a meteorite plummeting past him mid-air. At the time, he had no idea he had captured a rare moment in space history.
Experts, including astrophysicist Pål Brekke, confirmed that Anders had filmed a meteorite during its “dark flight”—the phase after it has burned out from atmospheric entry and is falling silently toward Earth. This was the first time ever that such an event had been caught on camera, making his footage a groundbreaking discovery.
But this extraordinary moment was not without its dangers. If the 5-kilo meteorite had struck Anders at 300 km/h, experts believe it could have been fatal. Geologists suspect the meteorite was part of a larger rock that exploded 20 kilometers above him, and had fate been slightly different, Anders might not have lived to tell the tale.
Determined to find the fallen meteorite, Anders has spent the past two years searching with a team of experts from the Geological Museum in Oslo, the Norwegian Space Centre, and the Norwegian Meteor Network. The challenging terrain—forests, rivers, and marshy landscapes—has made the search difficult, but his determination remains strong.
Beyond this unbelievable stroke of luck, Anders continues to follow his passion for skydiving, filmmaking, and outdoor exploration, always seeking new adventures. His story is a testament to how the universe sometimes aligns in the most unexpected ways, making him one of the luckiest—and most extraordinary—skydivers in history.
